The Baby Box Project
Giving gifts of hope to new moms

Donate a Baby Box

Dear friends of the Baby Box Project.

Our aim is to provide hope to new mothers, the poorest of the poor, by giving them a "box"  filled with items which will help them care for their new baby. (Our baby boxes are now given out in canvas shopping bags, which are easier to carry). Every mother deserves the dignity of taking their new baby home in new clothes. Many of the women live in squatter camps and lack a partner or support structure. The high incidence of abandonment of new born babies in Gauteng is evidence of how many mothers feel totally overwhelmed and helpless themselves.
The baby box is simple and doable. The contents are as follows:

 List of contents:

The boxes can be made for a boy, a girl, or in neutral colours.

Please package the contents in a Woolworths or Pick and Pay reusable canvas shopping bag. We find that a bag is easier as the mother are able to carry it easily on their way home - which is often by taxi.

The bags/boxes will be checked so that the contents are approximately standardized. When we hand out the boxes, we will also include a pamphlet on how to register the baby with home affairs. This will help the mother secure access to a child grant and for schooling. Ackermans and Jet have a good, affordable selection of baby clothing.

Can we ask that you please include a little note of encouragement for the new mom? This should ideally be an anonymous note, but gives the box a personal feel.

Donations can be dropped off at the offices of RD Clark. 5 Portman Road, Bryanston, during office hours. If you are not able to make office hours, please phone 011 706 3061 to make an alternative arrangement.

Alternate drop off points are in Greenside and Wits Education Campus. Please email info@babyboxproject.co.za to arrange.

We have a new collection point in Pretoria at the house of Michelle Stoop. Her address is 1062 Edwards Road, Eldorainge X1, Centurion. Please contact her at 082 488 1220 or pi3nkolifant@gmail.com to arrange.

We happily accept second hand baby clothes for further distribution, which we also distribute at the Rahima Moosa hospital, but ask that for the boxes the items be new.
